The boy is now officially 100 (+) days old... we had a dedication ceremony on Wednesday which was his 100 day anniversary. It was lovely to have so many close friends together in one place. Little lad's asleep on his mama's lap, we're chilling as I spin some smooth jams in the morning sunshine - niiice! So, another crazy week in the Eleven household. Turns out the young un has thrush (as well as teething) which explains the increasingly long, unconsolable screaming sessions we've been having this week (I think 8 hours was the record - ouch). Mrs Eleven has been amazing through it all, and we've got some medication for the lad which seems to be helping, but still... Next up, we discovered this week that baby boy chills out to pretty much anything with a strong syncopated beat, we thought previously it was just disco (seriously!) as he gets pretty blissful anytime I play anything in that genre. However, yesterday he was having a right old paddy, and on came this track... He stopped screaming, looked at the speakers with a big grin, and gurgled - bless! Boy's awake again, so quick summary (I look after the boy at the weekend's to give his mum some much needed baby-free time)... Peddlers: original, orchestral version, covered by Zero 7, from their 1972 album, Suite London. GSH: favourite track of his, finally got hold of it (on the album It's Your World) this month - the feel of this tune kills me! K&TG: dug out all my old K&TG records and have been listening through this month - this is the one for now, recognise the break? MB: just a good warm weather tune, great for listening to in the yard. F: great find - really pleased with this one, looking forward to playing it out. RO: we haven't been out for months, due to baby, instead been dancing around the house to this one! TJW: find the album... fat! IJC: from a new Nigerian funk comp a friend hipped me to - well worth it if you dig afro-styles. SAS: it's sunny - come on! Noze: love Fever, love covers of Fever, love this tune. BAA: deep truths set to funk, oh yeah... SD: finally got around to picking up this album (Total Destruction To Your Mind) and it's pure gold, like Jackie Wilson meets Van Morrison with the lyrical punch of Tom Waits or Frank Zappa - please find and purchase! There was a great response last week to the sunshine selection, so I thought I’d follow it up this week with another theme. This week’s theme is people, just because people are so important. And have I got some treats for you! It’s a bit of a downbeat affair this time, and the sequencing is kinda chill (to say the least!), almost all the tunes are at least 30 years old, but most of them are more relevant today than ever. Another week, another stack of gorgeous tunes to share with the world. This week's selection was inspired by an email from a friend, regarding the sunshine. We've enjoyed some beautiful weather here in Leeds, and as I type it's merry and bright outside. So I've dug deep in the crates, dusted off some very old and rare grooves to create a soulful sunshine selection for the first part of the show, moving into more modern beats for the latter half. There are some real gems in here, and most of them are now available on cd or reissue vinyl. Easy now! My name's One Eleven, I'm a husband, father (new), artist, activist, dj, producer and leftfield recording artist from Leeds, England. You can check my stuff on the links to the right, but this show is about showcasing some of the tunes I know and love, 1 hour and 11 minutes of musical goodness each week. This is my first ever podcast, and due to technical difficulties (see below) it's turned out to be nothing more than a bunch of tunes I like kind of thrown together, but they're good tunes (imho) so I hope that makes up for it. First up, apologies for the absence of speech / idents / coherent mixing on this one, I wanted to get it out for 1st June, so had to grab any time I could (which involved putting it together while I had my darling newborn son - 7 weeks old now - strapped to my chest, he's teething at the moment too, so it was a challenge soothing him and putting the show together at the same time!) Anyway, on with the tracklisting: 080601OneEleven - Episode 1 I've got an album coming out very soon, 111 (very short) tracks, 1 hour 11 minutes long, it's called "The One Eleven" (ha!) and here's the first track, Edgar Varese meets Mr Magic, Rick Rubin and Pharaoh Sanders downtown: 0ne Eleven - Onetroducing Next up, a bit of vintage UK niceness, a downbeat treat from his 1981 Questionnaire album Chas Jankel - Magic of Music Following in the mock reggae vein, Brazilian percussion legend wigs out, then gets down and dirty on one of my favourite tracks from my first ever bargain-basement albums (£2.50, old charity shop in Southampton - yes!) This album, "Touching You, Touching Me" also includes a few Gilles Peterson faves, and a few of the tracks turn up on some fine jazz / latin compilations.) Airto Moreira - Move It On Up Hope you're feeling the good vibes now - that's how I like it, positive and nice :) Next track is fresh for 2008, from his "Welcome" album on Stone's Throw - pure abstract sweetness. James Pants - Theme From Paris Keeping on the beats tip, a little something something that always make me feel good in the sunshine Theory Hazit - Lady Rollerskate II Introducing a slow-motion boogie classic now, in the shape of the soulful sounds of Phyllis Hyman - Living Inside Your Love Ow - feeling that! Sorry again for the nasty mix - the boy kicked off just as I was cueing it up - oh well, life takes precedence over music, that's the way it is... New beat-creator AD Bourke (don't know a lot about him, think he may be another Red Bull Academy graduate?) hooks it up next with AD Bourke - Someseek Then more boogie business - Fat Larry's Band? De La Soul? Nope - the original bassline... The Whatnauts - Help Is On The Way (Act like you know ;) LOVE the jazzy piano on that one... Stepping it up a gear with a funky, fuzzy, wiggy baaaaaad mamajama of a tune from the late 1981 album "Who's A Funkadelic?" - eat the synth solo! Funkadelic - You'll Like It Too Easing in to the groove with a classic from The Fatback Band - Changin' Next the triple one drops a funk bomb from a guy generally more associated with disco Dan Hartman - Double-O Love More 2008 (pre-order) pressure from his new Warp album, "Los Angeles", (in my opinion, the best new release this year, this deserves to be huge) my favourite upbeat cut, a big slice of future funk... Flying Lotus - Parisian Goldfish Into a huge b-boy break, afro-jazz style, still sounds fresh after all these years Manu Dibango - African Battle Moving now into a tune that's become something of a balearic banger... From his 1981 folk (?!) covers album "Connections" Richie Havens - Going Back To My Roots Another nasty mix takes us into a deep beat track done by the forces of nature - a rhythm workout from some of the native tongues' finest Jungle Brothers - Good News Coming Stepping through to Oakland for a prophetic message that is increasingly relevant today Tower Of Power - There Is Only So Much Oil In The Ground Switching styles completely for a healthy wedge of electro-soul Symbol One - Love Juice (Moulinex Rx) And finishing off with a big portion of latin-tinged soul jazz Jon Lucien - Listen Love Thanks for downloading, I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed putting it together.
